WASHINGTON — A faction of Republican lawmakers is pushing back against Donald Trump's shifting stance on Russia, threatening to withhold backing for the president's legislative agenda following controversial moves regarding the war in Ukraine.
GOP Lawmakers Object to Russia Deal and Sanctions Pause
The intra-party friction emerged after the Trump administration struck an agreement to purchase Russian diesel and decided to pause existing sanctions against Moscow. Outgoing Nebraska Representative Don Bacon voiced strong opposition to the administration's direction, criticizing the handling of the conflict as "embarrassing" and labeling the recent policy shifts as "absolutely disgraceful."
Bacon and other dissenting Republicans expressed deep concern over what they view as a softening posture toward Russian President Vladimir Putin. The backlash marks a notable fracture within the party, as lawmakers threaten to leverage their support for broader presidential priorities in response to the administration's diplomatic and economic concessions to the Kremlin.
