Serbian authorities are investigating a "terrorist attack" that occurred early Wednesday morning outside the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade. According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, an unidentified assailant armed with two knives approached a member of the Gendarmerie guarding the facility shortly after midnight.
The attacker reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" before assaulting the officer. The guard, who sustained a minor facial injury during the encounter, opened fire in self-defense, killing the assailant. Dacic confirmed that the attacker was a minor.
Heightened Security Measures
In response to the incident, the Serbian government has raised the national terror threat level to its highest status. Police presence has been significantly increased at key locations throughout the capital as a precautionary measure.
This event marks the second time in recent years that the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade has been targeted. In June 2024, a separate assailant armed with a crossbow wounded a police officer at the same location before being shot and killed by security personnel.
