Ukraine's access to Starlink satellite service limited despite Trump's claims of restoration
Ukraine's military has reported that its access to the military-grade version of Starlink, known as Starshield, remains limited despite US President Donald Trump's claims that the service had been restored to full speed. The restrictions have crippled key air defences and hampered air defence systems that stop Russian attacks, according to Ukrainian officials.
The issue has sparked a war of words between the Trump administration, officials in Kyiv, and Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, which operates the Starlink service. Trump initially denied any responsibility for the changes to Starshield, stating that the US president has no control over the company and its decisions. However, a European official has contradicted Trump's claims, stating that the service is not fully functioning.
The limitations on Starshield have significant implications for Ukraine's military operations, particularly in its efforts to counter Russian attacks in the Black Sea region. The service was previously operating at a cap of 161km/hr, which has rendered many of the drones used by Kyiv to strike behind the frontlines inoperable. The situation remains unclear, with officials on both sides continuing to trade blame for the restrictions on Starlink access.
