Storm Austen Brings Widespread Travel Disruption and Power Cuts to the UK
Storm Austen is causing significant travel disruption and power cuts across the UK, with strong winds and heavy rain reported in various parts of the country. The storm has resulted in the cancellation of flights, train services, and road closures, affecting thousands of people.
According to the National Grid, over 60,000 homes have had their power restored, but hundreds of homes in England and Wales remain without electricity. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber weather warnings for wind and rain, with a second storm, named Boelo, expected to hit the UK on Saturday.
Rail lines in Scotland will close from 21:00 on Saturday, and people are advised to avoid all travel unless necessary. Guernsey Airport has cancelled all inbound and outbound flights, and Liberty Bus in Jersey is advising people to check its service disruption page before traveling.
The storm has also caused significant damage, with reports of trees crashing down and branches blocking railway lines. In Jersey, a wall was crushed after a tree was uprooted by wind gusts of up to 84mph. The vulnerable and elderly members of storm-hit communities are being prioritized by care services, with carers working to ensure they have enough food, fluids, and medication.
The situation is expected to continue to develop, with the Met Office closely monitoring the storms and providing updates as necessary. The government is advising people to avoid going outside during the stormy conditions.
