Surprise Drop in UK Jobless Rate Strengthens Case for Interest Rate Hike

Official figures released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that the UK unemployment rate unexpectedly fell to 4.7% in the three months leading up to August, defying economists' predictions of an increase.

The latest labor market data marks a dip from July's rate of 4.9%, bringing unemployment to its lowest level since July of the previous year. While economists had anticipated the jobless rate to rise to 5% due to mounting cost pressures on employers, the wider figures also revealed a pickup in regular wage growth when excluding bonuses.

Market analysts note that the stronger-than-expected employment figures and steady wage growth reinforce the likelihood that the Bank of England will proceed with an interest rate hike to combat ongoing inflation challenges. London Stock Exchange Group data indicated that a vast majority of market participants already viewed a borrowing cost increase as imminent prior to the ONS report.
