Tens of Thousands Protest Across Spain Over Worsening Housing Crisis

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have marched through Madrid and various other cities across Spain to demand stronger protections for tenants. The widespread demonstrations erupted as millions of residents face difficulties finding affordable housing amid a deepening national crisis.

The protests were sparked after newly introduced legislation failed to pass and the government did not secure emergency measures to address the situation. According to reports from the demonstrations, clashes occurred between a number of protesters and police within the city.

Official data highlights the severe financial pressure facing renters and buyers. Figures from the national statistics institute (INE) for the second quarter of 2026 reveal that house prices jumped by 12.2% over the preceding year. Madrid and Barcelona were identified as the most expensive cities in the country for renters, with monthly costs reaching €22.70 per square metre in Madrid and €23.80 per square metre in Barcelona.
