Trump Administration Renews Bid to Block Alaska Election Results

The United States Department of Justice has filed a revised lawsuit seeking to prevent the certification of Alaska’s upcoming Senate election results if Republican incumbent Dan S. Sullivan loses narrowly in the November 3 midterm election.

The Justice Department's revised complaint incorporates dozens of subpoenas and document preservation requests aimed at investigating the candidate recruitment allegations. While Peltola’s campaign has denied involvement in the spoiler candidate's bid, President Donald Trump and other Republicans have called for investigations and criticized the practice of ballot-stacking.

Legal experts and former officials have questioned the federal government’s jurisdiction and legal authority to intervene in state-run election administration, noting that under the U.S. Constitution, oversight falls primarily to the states. The Alaska Division of Elections previously allowed the candidate to appear on the ballot, and the state has taken steps to help voters distinguish between the candidates in a race that remains closely watched ahead of Election Day.
