Binance Investigates Massive Security Breach as Billions in Assets Frozen

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is investigating a major security incident that has impacted a significant volume of assets. The exchange confirmed on Thursday that it is working to mitigate the fallout, pledging to "cover all losses" as investigations into the potential heist continue.

Preliminary findings suggest the breach may have originated from a compromised engineer's laptop, which granted an attacker unauthorized access to make withdrawals. While the full extent of the damage remains under review, Binance has successfully frozen roughly half of the affected assets with the assistance of other industry platforms. The exchange clarified that the incident is isolated to Binance.com.

Industry-Wide Response

The crypto sector mobilized quickly to contain the potential theft, with stablecoin issuers moving to freeze funds linked to the incident. Changpeng Zhao, the exchange’s founder and former CEO, acknowledged the severity of the situation on social media, stating, "It does look like a hack on Binance." Although Zhao no longer manages the firm, he remains a significant shareholder and expressed confidence that user funds would be fully covered, noting that "user funds are safe."

Binance has urged its users to remain cautious of scams while its security teams review all relevant information with urgency. The exchange is currently coordinating with relevant parties to identify the perpetrators and has promised to provide updates as its internal investigation concludes.
