Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, has confirmed it is investigating a major security incident involving approximately $6.3bn in digital assets. The platform reported that the breach may have originated from a compromised engineer's laptop, which allegedly granted an attacker the ability to execute unauthorized withdrawals.
In response to the incident, Binance stated that it has successfully frozen roughly half of the impacted assets through collaborative efforts with other industry platforms. The exchange has publicly committed to covering all user losses resulting from the breach. While the full extent of the financial damage remains under investigation, the scale of the incident could potentially mark the largest cryptocurrency heist in history, surpassing the $1.5bn hack experienced by Bybit in 2025.
Industry observers had raised alarms regarding suspicious activity on the exchange hours before the company issued its formal alerts. Binance, which serves over 300 million registered users globally, is currently working to secure its systems as it navigates this significant security challenge.
