Trump Drops Select Canada Tariffs to Aid Embattled Maine Senator Susan Collins

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump rolled back a series of tariffs on Canada on Friday, a White House move aimed at supporting Republican Senator Susan Collins during a difficult re-election campaign in Maine.

The White House stated that the trade policy adjustments were made to “better serve the public interest.” The decision arrives as Collins navigates a competitive race that could influence control of Congress, fighting to retain her seat in a state where the administration's ongoing trade disputes have angered local voters and industries.

Exemptions Target Key Maine Industries

Senator Collins announced that the tariff exemptions apply to nine specific agricultural and regional products, including Maine staples such as blueberries, potatoes, apples, and seaweed.

According to Collins, many producers and farmers throughout the state depend heavily on specialized equipment and materials imported from across the northern border. She noted that these cross-border supplies are largely unavailable from domestic American sources or could only be replaced at a substantial financial cost.
