Trump Touts Preemptive DOJ Lawsuit to Block Alaska Senate Race Certification

President Donald Trump has publicly claimed responsibility for a Justice Department lawsuit aimed at halting the certification of Alaska's U.S. Senate race should Republicans lose. Speaking on the legal challenge, Trump stated, “I’m the one that said do it,” as the administration pushes the intervention with less than two weeks remaining before the midterm elections.

The federal lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department on October 22, seeks to prevent Alaska from certifying the election results pending an investigation. The legal challenge argues that potential "voter confusion" surrounding two candidates named Dan Sullivan on the ballot could influence the outcome in favor of the Democratic nominee, former state representative Mary Peltola. Republican incumbent Senator Dan S. Sullivan is defending his seat against Peltola and another candidate, retired schoolteacher Daniel J. Sullivan.

According to the Justice Department filing, any result impacted by voter confusion would violate duties under the National Voting Rights Act regarding election integrity. Neither the Alaska Division of Elections nor the Peltola campaign immediately responded to requests for comment following the filing. Meanwhile, legal experts have strongly criticized the administration's move, with Notre Dame Law School election law expert Derek Muller describing the legal argument as designed "to win the press release rather than the litigation."
