US Offers Support to Canada Following Deadly CFB Wainwright Fire
The United States has offered assistance to Canada in the wake of the deadly fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra made the offer in a social media post on Friday, stating that the U.S. government has made a formal offer of resources to support the recovery of soldiers affected by traumatic burns.
The fire, which occurred on October 17, resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and injured 39 others. The incident occurred during a training exercise on an anti-grenade launching range, which was exacerbated by fierce winds. Twenty-seven soldiers remain in hospital, with 13 in critical condition and many suffering from severe burns.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, whose riding includes the base, thanked Hoekstra for the offer of support, stating that it was a "gesture of support for our injured soldiers and their families at such a difficult time." Poilievre's office has informed the defence minister and the Alberta government of the offer, and will determine whether additional resources and expertise are needed.
The incident is currently under investigation, with three separate probes underway to determine the cause of the tragedy.
