The U.S. State Department has confirmed it will issue visas to Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and his family, even as his current location remains unknown to authorities. The announcement comes as Brazilian officials intensify efforts to track the politician, who is currently under investigation for alleged money laundering and corruption.
Legal Pressure and Disappearance
The situation escalated after Bolsonaro failed to comply with a Brazilian Supreme Court order to surrender his passports. Following his non-compliance, police moved to cancel his travel documents. While Bolsonaro previously stated he had no intention of leaving Brazil, he has not been seen since his defeat in Sunday’s presidential election against incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Brazilian federal officers are currently reviewing border crossings to determine if the senator has fled the country. While initial reports suggested he might have traveled to Argentina, local authorities there have confirmed no record of his entry. Meanwhile, legal representatives for the senator have stated they have no information regarding his whereabouts.
Bolsonaro, who has not yet conceded the election, continues to deny the allegations of financial misconduct leveled against him. The U.S. government’s decision to move forward with the visa issuance adds a new layer of complexity to the ongoing legal proceedings in Brazil.
