A cross-party committee of MPs has issued a stark warning that the UK government’s current strategy to combat obesity is “doomed to fail.” In a new report, the health and social care select committee argued that the government’s 10-year “moonshot” ambition for England lacks the necessary structure to achieve meaningful results.
Call for Direct Leadership
The committee concluded that the existing plan shows no signs of reversing rising obesity rates. To rectify this, lawmakers are calling for a fundamental rethink of the strategy, emphasizing that success is impossible without direct, personal leadership from the Prime Minister. The report suggests that the current approach is insufficient to address the scale of the public health crisis.
The committee’s findings highlight a significant gap between the government's stated goals and the practical measures currently in place to tackle the epidemic. Without a more robust, high-level intervention, the MPs warn that the decade-long target will remain out of reach.
