Andy Burnham has declared that no former UK armed forces personnel should be forced to sleep on the streets this Christmas, as Downing Street prepares a fresh push to support homeless veterans.
Additionally, an extra £8.7m is being distributed to eight specific organizations nationwide—including Veteran Housing Scotland, Launchpad, and SSAFA—to assist housing providers in supporting veterans facing complex challenges such as health and addiction issues. The measure forms part of a broader government target to offer winter shelter to everyone currently sleeping rough, following official figures that estimated a record high of 4,793 rough sleepers on a single night in England in autumn 2025.
The government's new push has drawn varied political responses. While Liberal Democrats defence spokesman James MacCleary described the funding as an important first step that still requires long-term guarantees, the Conservative Party raised separate criticisms regarding government announcements made over the Remembrance weekend.
Veterans or individuals supporting them who are affected by rough sleeping can access a dedicated UK-wide helpline at 0800 9520774 to connect directly with housing and specialist assistance.
