A 28-year-old Brooklyn woman remains hospitalized on life support following a stabbing attack while jogging along the waterfront, according to police reports.
Katie Suarez of Gravesend, Brooklyn, was attacked on Friday evening while running along the Shore Parkway Greenway near Bay 17th Street. Authorities stated that no arrests had been made as of Sunday.
According to an internal police report, Ms. Suarez had finished her shift at a TD Bank branch in the Caesar’s Bay Shopping Center around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. After meeting her mother nearby and changing into running gear, she began running west along the waterfront path. Her father later contacted her by phone at approximately 8 p.m., at which point she indicated she was roughly a half-mile away. When she failed to arrive and stopped answering phone calls, her father searched the area and discovered her with two stab wounds to the neck.
Emergency responders transported Ms. Suarez to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn in critical condition. Community and running organizations, including New York Road Runners, expressed sorrow over the incident.
The violent encounter follows other recent attacks on runners in New York City, including an October 24 assault in Central Park and echoes safety concerns reminiscent of past high-profile crimes along city running paths, such as the 2016 murder of Karina Vetrano in Queens.
