Yvette Cooper Reverses Decision to Abolish NHS Patient Champion

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has abandoned plans to scrap Healthwatch England, the independent body tasked with representing the interests of NHS patients. The decision follows significant backlash from cross-party MPs who argued that the watchdog is essential for holding the health service to account.

A Shift in Government Strategy

The government had previously intended to dissolve the organization as part of a broader restructuring of the English health service. In addition to the reversal on Healthwatch, the government is also reconsidering other proposed changes, including the potential axing of the Health Services Safety Investigations Body, the removal of automatic council representation on integrated care boards, and the elimination of the requirement for a nurse to sit on every NHS foundation trust board.

By choosing to retain and extend the role of Healthwatch England, the government has signaled a pivot in its approach to health service oversight, prioritizing the preservation of independent patient advocacy within the NHS framework.
