Zimbabweans Face Hardship After Fleeing South Africa
Zimbabweans who fled xenophobic violence in South Africa are confronting severe economic hardship and a lack of sufficient support as they attempt to re-establish their lives in their home country. Individuals affected by the crisis have described their experiences in South Africa as frightening.
Recounting the ordeal to Al Jazeera, a returnee named Chimbuya stated that the situation was scary. While they had access to healthcare while abroad, returning home has introduced new struggles regarding long-term well-being and stability.
Economic Security and Financial Hurdles
According to Chimbuya, the core obstacle is not simply helping citizens cross the border, but rather ensuring they remain economically secure once they have arrived. For many returnees, trying to restart their livelihoods involves major financial barriers.
Chimbuya explained that funding is a primary obstacle as he tries to move forward with his plans to open a grocery store.
