Autom8Labs has introduced a new suite of 22 free Model Context Protocol (MCP) skills designed specifically to work with the company's existing MCP connectors across major design software. While giving artificial intelligence agents direct access to design tools is a major step forward, the development addresses the challenge that raw software access does not automatically grant professional workflow knowledge.

Bridging Tools and Methodology

According to James Gray of Autom8Labs, simply providing an AI agent with access to a design application does not ensure it understands optimal workflows. While the company's MCP connectors provide the necessary tools for software interaction, the newly launched skills supply the actual method.

Instead of merely receiving final commands, an AI agent utilizing these skills is actively guided through the sequential steps an experienced practitioner would normally take to complete a specific task within applications like Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, Grasshopper, MicroStation, 3ds Max, Rhino, Civil 3D, and Advance Steel.

Software Coverage and Specialized Skills

The initial launch comprises 22 free MCP skills distributed across several architectural, engineering, and construction platforms. The distribution covers specialized workflows tailored to different software environments:

  • Autodesk Revit: The largest share of the skills focuses on Revit, encompassing family creation, scan-to-BIM processes, model health management, structural engineering, MEP coordination, site layout, and document control.
  • Grasshopper: Features a computational design skill built to construct parametric definitions following standard computational design logic.
  • 3ds Max: Includes visualization skills programmed to set up rendering engines like Corona or V-Ray according to professional visualization practices.

Custom Development for Firms

In addition to the public suite of 22 free skills, Autom8Labs offers custom development services. The company can build and test tailored skills specifically for individual AEC firms, incorporating proprietary templates, internal standards, and specific sign-off checks unique to each organization's workflow.
