Tesla is launching a new initiative to broaden consumer exposure to its advanced driver assistance technology. By partnering with the peer-to-peer car sharing marketplace Turo, the automaker aims to put its driver-assistance software directly into the hands of more drivers.
The strategy targets everyday renters and car owners alike, utilizing the massive Turo rental fleet as a mobile showroom for Tesla's driver-assistance capabilities.
Expanding Reach Through Car Sharing
Tesla has continually sought new avenues to expose prospective buyers and everyday motorists to its technology. Through the collaboration with Turo, individuals renting Tesla vehicles on the platform will have an opportunity to experience the software firsthand during their trips.
This approach allows drivers to test the capabilities in real-world driving scenarios outside of a traditional dealership test drive, which is typically brief and accompanied by a sales representative.
Incentives for Turo Hosts
To help drive participation, the initiative also extends a perk to vehicle owners who list their cars on the car-sharing network. Eligible Turo hosts will receive a one-month free trial of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software.
By equipping host vehicles with the software trial, Tesla encourages owners to upgrade their listings, thereby increasing the total number of shared vehicles available with the technology enabled for renters.
Strategic Implications for Software Adoption
Automakers increasingly rely on software subscriptions and feature adoption to drive recurring revenue. For Tesla, convincing drivers of the utility of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) remains a core priority.
By integrating the software into the Turo ecosystem, Tesla creates a low-pressure environment for consumers to evaluate the feature over the course of a multi-day rental, potentially converting casual users into long-term subscribers.
