VidsHive News — The 2026 U.S. Senate midterm elections determine the balance of power in Washington, with control of the chamber hinging on a tightly contested map of 35 seats.

Heading into the election cycle, Republicans held a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Because Vice President JD Vance holds the constitutional power to break tie votes in the upper chamber, Democrats face the threshold of capturing 51 seats to secure outright control.

The primary hurdle for Democrats involved defending their existing footprint. Out of the 13 Democratic-held seats up for election, battlegrounds such as Georgia, Michigan, and New Hampshire emerged as highly competitive races, each having been decided by margins of fewer than three percentage points during the 2024 presidential election. To flip the chamber, Democrats targeted Republican-held seats in states including Alaska, Maine, North Carolina, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas. The 2026 cycle also featured two special elections for previously vacated seats in Ohio and Florida, where winning candidates would serve out the remainder of the terms ending in 2029.
