Apple’s first foray into the foldable smartphone market, the iPhone Duo, is facing early scrutiny following reports of display failures. Since the device went on sale globally on October 23, a growing number of customers have taken to social media platforms like Reddit to report that their screens have cracked after only hours or days of use.
Users describe hearing a distinct "crunching" sound when unfolding the device, which is often followed by a large crack appearing along the center crease. Some owners have also reported display malfunctions, including white patches or vertical and horizontal lines appearing across the inner screen. In one instance, a user noted that the hinge became noticeably stiffer before the display failed, despite the phone having sustained no drops or unusual pressure.
Apple’s Response
Apple has acknowledged the issue, stating that a "small number" of units are affected by a display glitch. The company is encouraging any customers experiencing these problems to contact AppleCare for support. While some affected users have already received immediate replacements at Apple retail stores, industry analysts are monitoring the situation closely to determine if the defect is widespread or limited to a small batch of initial production units.
The iPhone Duo, which retails starting at $1,999, represents a significant test for Apple as it enters the competitive foldable category. Analysts suggest that while the company’s response to these early hardware concerns will be critical, it is currently too early to gauge the long-term impact on the product's reputation.
