Antiterrorism prosecutors investigate motive after gunman kills one and wounds five others near Paris.
French President Emmanuel Macron has condemned a deadly shooting in the Paris suburbs as a racist terrorist attack. The incident, which unfolded on Friday in the towns of Trappes and La Verrière in the Yvelines district west of the capital, left one person dead and five others injured.
According to authorities, an unidentified 39-year-old male suspect was taken into custody shortly after the brief rampage, which lasted less than 15 minutes. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated that the gunman fired at a children's playground, a fuel station, and a medical centre, utilizing what appeared to be military-style tactics.
Among the five wounded victims is a 12-year-old girl. Officials confirmed that three of the injured individuals sustained life-threatening injuries. Ali Rabeh, the mayor of Trappes, reported that the shooter fired from a vehicle and appeared to target people at random with the intent of carrying out a mass casualty event.
France’s national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office has stepped in to investigate the precise motive behind the violence, treating the assault as a potential Islamophobic terrorist crime.
