Ecuador Opposition Leader Luisa Gonzalez Arrested in Campaign Finance Probe

Ecuadorian opposition leader and former presidential runner-up Luisa Gonzalez was arrested amid an ongoing investigation into political financing and campaign spending. Her party confirmed the detention, which stems from a probe into the 2023 electoral cycle.

Gonzalez, a key figure in the left-wing Citizens' Revolution party and a close ally of former socialist President Rafael Correa, dismissed the allegations as absurd in a social media statement while calling for party unity. The Citizens' Revolution Movement immediately denounced the arrest as politically motivated persecution and demanded her immediate release.

Authorities have detained a total of three individuals in connection with the investigation, who face potential charges related to money laundering and the lawful sourcing of campaign funds. Gonzalez previously ran against President Daniel Noboa in both the 2023 and 2025 elections.
