The security concerns prompted immediate military responses in the region. Hungarian Defense Minister Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi reported that the nation's fighter jets were scrambled three times in a single morning to escort civilian airliners through Hungarian airspace. Among the incidents was a threat directed at a Wizz Air flight traveling from Brussels to Sofia, which flight crews managed under challenging circumstances.
Despite the unsettling nature of the coordinated threats, aviation officials noted that the affected aircraft represent a tiny fraction of the continent's daily air traffic. Eurocontrol tracking indicated that approximately 26,709 flights were scheduled across European airspace on Friday.
