FBI and Postal Inspectors Investigate Suspicious Letters Sent to US Election Offices

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the US Postal Inspection Service are investigating a series of mailings sent to state officials and election offices nationwide containing an unknown substance.

The security incidents occurred just weeks before the November US midterm elections. Election officers in Louisiana and Oklahoma received envelopes containing a powdery substance, which prompted building evacuations. Additionally, the US Postal Service intercepted a similar package containing white powder that had been addressed to the Ohio secretary of state.

Authorities have not yet identified the substance or determined the full scope of the mailings as the joint federal investigation continues.
