Audi has officially launched the third-generation Q5 in South Africa, bringing the redesigned midsize luxury SUV to a local market navigating a shrinking luxury segment and a broader buying-down trend over the last decade.

Positioned between the compact Q3 and upcoming Q7, the third-gen Q5 arrives as a vital volume driver for the brand, serving as its second best-selling Q model after the Q3. It competes directly against the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. Quattro all-wheel drive, a seven-speed S tronic transmission, and steel spring suspension come standard across the range.

During local first-drive evaluations, the Q5 showcased a refined cabin. Every version incorporates a 48V mild-hybrid system designed to lower fuel consumption and smooth out power delivery.

The local engine options include:

  • TFSI (2.0L petrol turbo)
  • TDI (2.0L diesel)
  • SQ5 (3.0L V6 petrol): The performance flagship is hustled along by a 3.0l V6 petrol engine mustering 270kW and 550Nm, delivering the same refinement as its stablemates while scooting the 0-100km/h sprint in just 4.5 seconds with sport suspension to keep it better pinned down in the corners.

Optional suspension upgrades include adaptive air suspension, which adds R41,200 to the price and allows the driver to select harder or softer ride settings. Test drivers noted that these air springs delivered a cushy ride that added to the Q5’s all-round refinement.
