Journalists Call for Nationwide Protests Against Censorship

A Response to Systemic Pressure

The demonstrations serve as a collective response to a series of restrictive measures, including the detention and arrest of journalists, the appointment of state-appointed trustees to media outlets, and widespread access bans on news websites and social media accounts. The protests coincide with the one-year anniversary of the appointment of a trustee to TELE 1, highlighting a broader pattern of pressure that has seen outlets like Halk TV shuttered and numerous digital platforms silenced.

Organizers emphasized that journalism is not a crime and that reporting, questioning, and public oversight are constitutionally protected rights. They specifically condemned the use of pre-trial detention and electronic monitoring for journalists, arguing that these measures are used to suppress critical reporting rather than address legitimate legal concerns.

Nationwide Mobilization

Protests are taking place in multiple cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, İzmir, Adana, Antalya, Bursa, Diyarbakır, Eskişehir, Kocaeli, and Van. Participants are gathering in central locations—such as Istanbul’s Kadıköy district and Ankara’s Sakarya Street—to deliver a unified message: "The press is free and cannot be censored."

The coalition of press organizations has invited all segments of society, including political parties, bar associations, and human rights groups, to stand in solidarity. They maintain that if the press is silenced, the public remains uninformed and those in power remain unaccountable.
