A scientific report backed by 17 experts has warned that Earth is facing an array of severe environmental pressures, including mass extinction, climate-driven upheaval, and declining health that threaten the stability of human civilization.
Published in Frontiers in Conservation Science, the report highlights that the planet's condition is far more critical than widely recognized. Researchers pointed to compounding factors such as rising temperatures, a projected population boom reaching 10 billion people by 2050, the destruction of vital rainforests like the Amazon, and the growing toxification of the planet from synthetic waste and plastics.
The authors noted that the time lag between environmental damage and its visible effects often makes it difficult for the public and even well-informed experts to fully grasp the scale of the crisis. These cumulative pressures threaten to spark resource scarcity, widespread famine, and increased risks of pandemics.
Rather than calling for surrender, the researchers stated their intention is to provide world leaders with a realistic assessment of the planet's condition to encourage urgent intervention and long-term planning.
