Man Charged Over Alleged 'Targeted' Car Attack on Australian MP Helen Haines

Police in Australia have charged a 43-year-old man following an alleged deliberate vehicle attack on independent federal MP Helen Haines outside her electorate office in Victoria.

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon in Wangaratta, a rural town north-east of Melbourne, when Dr. Haines was struck by a car outside her office. Victoria Police stated that investigators will allege the incident was targeted, though they consider it an isolated event with no ongoing threat to the broader community. A local highway patrol unit responded rapidly, arriving on the scene within eight seconds of the emergency call, while quick-thinking bystanders—including a local barber who pulled the driver from the vehicle—intervened immediately.

The suspect, identified by local media as Brendan Nugent of nearby Tarrawingee, has been held in custody. He is scheduled to appear at the Wangaratta Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to face charges including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

Dr. Haines, 65, was transported to a Melbourne hospital, where she underwent surgery and remains in a critical but stable condition. Local media and officials have expressed deep shock over the violent episode, which has drawn widespread condemnation and messages of support from political leaders across Australia and New Zealand, alongside community vigils held in Wangaratta.
