Chancellor John Healey Announces Budget Featuring Minimum Wage Rise and Housing Support

Chancellor John Healey has unveiled his latest Budget, introducing an increase to the minimum wage alongside measures designed to assist individuals attempting to get onto the housing ladder.

Student Loan Repayment Implications

The newly announced minimum wage increase means that a full-time working 21-year-old who took out a student loan after 2023 will now earn a sufficient amount to reach the £25,000 repayment threshold. Once earnings exceed this specified threshold, these workers will begin making loan repayments.

Housing and Departmental Measures

The Budget includes a property scheme that will provide eligible buyers with a loan valued at 20% of their property's value to assist with the purchase. While the chancellor acknowledged the significant scale of the crisis currently facing young people, he stated that further solutions would not arrive yet. Additionally, Healey instructed government departments to implement 1% cuts in order to fund defence.
