Liberal Democrats Retain Salisbury Seat in Historic Wiltshire Council By-Election

The Liberal Democrats have successfully retained the Salisbury Milford county council seat following a local by-election that was described locally as the most important in four decades. Mac Brown secured election to Wiltshire Council during the Thursday vote.

The outcome means Wiltshire Council will maintain its current political structure. The Liberal Democrats have governed via a minority administration since 2025, following an election where no single party managed to secure overall control of the local authority.

The composition of the council currently stands at 42 seats held by the Liberal Democrats, 38 seats held by the Conservatives, 10 seats held by Reform, and seven seats held by Independents.

Following the result, Salisbury City Council leader Councillor Sam Charleston expressed strong approval, stating that he was absolutely delighted with the outcome.
