Mauritius, recognized as a hub for tourism and financial services, has implemented an overnight curfew following the most severe riots to hit the Indian Ocean island in decades. The unrest was sparked after a woman was shot by police.
Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam instituted the curfew on Tuesday in an effort to suppress the widespread disturbances. The prime minister issued a warning directed at individuals acting contrary to the country's interests, stating that those responsible for the actions will face severe consequences.
Situation and Outlook
By Wednesday morning, authorities reported that traffic was flowing again across the island and encouraged residents to return to their regular daily routines. Police indicated that the government successfully curtailed the most severe aspects of the unrest.
Despite these measures, officials noted that localized protests could potentially re-emerge. Additionally, water shortages are anticipated to continue across the region until the arrival of the rainy season in December.
