Democratic socialist Melat Kiros has won the race to represent Colorado's 1st Congressional District, making history as the first Gen Z woman ever elected to the United States Congress.
Kiros, a 29-year-old attorney and Ethiopian immigrant, secured victory in the reliably blue district encompassing most of Denver. Her win follows a high-profile primary upset earlier this year, in which she defeated 15-term incumbent Representative Diana DeGette amid widespread voter calls for political change and fresh leadership in Washington, D.C.
Endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, Kiros campaigned on an expanded social safety net featuring policies such as Medicare for All and universal childcare. Her platform also included progressive and contentious proposals, including abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and ending U.S. military aid to Israel—a stance that drew criticism and debate throughout the campaign trail.
Kiros joins Florida Representative Maxwell Frost as one of the very few lawmakers under the age of 30 serving on Capitol Hill, arriving as the Democratic Party navigates continuous demands from voters for generational renewal.
