Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras has been named the 2026 World Series MVP, capping off a historic season that saw the franchise capture its first-ever championship. The 28-year-old standout led the Brewers to a 4-1 series victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, concluding with a decisive win in Game 5 on Wednesday night in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Mastering the Strike Zone
Contreras proved instrumental in the series, batting .381 while anchoring the Brewers' pitching staff. Beyond his offensive production, which included an RBI double in the clinching game, he successfully navigated the league's new Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system. Contreras won 10 of his 13 appeals during the World Series, a skill he honed throughout a regular season where he led MLB with 105 successful overturns.
His performance places him in elite company, becoming only the eighth catcher in baseball history to earn World Series MVP honors. He joins a distinguished list that includes legends like Johnny Bench and Salvador Perez.
A Historic Year for Venezuela
The victory marks a significant milestone for Contreras, who celebrated on the field draped in a Venezuelan flag. Having been part of the Venezuelan team that won the World Baseball Classic earlier this year, Contreras is now among the few players to win both the WBC and the World Series in the same calendar year. "It’s history, history for my country," Contreras said following the win.
While Contreras took home the MVP trophy, the Brewers' championship run was a collective effort. Teammates Jackson Chourio set a record for hits in a five-game series, and rookie Cooper Pratt provided critical offensive production, including go-ahead hits in each of the final three games of the series.
