New South Wales has passed Australia-first legislation legalizing human composting, providing residents with a third official option for body disposition alongside traditional burial and cremation.
The landmark laws cleared parliament on Wednesday. Following the vote, several state MPs publicly stated their intention to utilize the eco-friendly practice themselves after they die.
Also known as natural organic reduction, the method transforms human remains into soil. The legislative shift makes New South Wales the first jurisdiction in the country to offer the alternative.
