# Jordan Strikes Syria in Retaliation for Church Attack That Killed Nine
Syria says five killed after Jordan retaliates with airstrikes
Jordan has struck what its military says were "terrorist organisations" in Syria, in retaliation for a church attack last week that killed nine people. Syrian health officials told state media five people — including women, children, and an elderly man — were killed when Jordanian fighter jets struck a village in southern Daraa province on Monday. Jordan said its jets had killed and wounded "several terrorists" without giving further details, and stated it had coordinated with the Syrian government.
The retaliatory strike follows a shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak on Friday that killed nine people and injured 34. Jordan's Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya told state-affiliated television the attackers were all Jordanians who had been holed up in an abandoned house near the church before dawn. Senior government security officials later said Jordanian forces arrested two brothers and their brother-in-law over the church attack.
Syria said it had not been notified of Monday's attack before the strike and responded by closing a border crossing with Jordan. The incident marks the latest escalation in tensions between the two countries following the funeral attack.
