TRAIL — Embracing a decades-long local tradition, two Trail seniors marked the changing season with a brisk plunge into the Columbia River at Gyro Park.
Beyond camaraderie and celebrating milestones like birthdays and anniversaries at the local landmark known as the Whale’s Back, the swimmers highlighted the mental reset provided by cold water. Science indicates that cold-water immersion triggers the body's dive reflex, shifting brain chemistry to increase dopamine and noradrenaline levels, which can lead to sustained alertness and well-being.
Experts remind anyone considering a cold plunge in the Columbia River to exercise caution due to strong currents, changing water levels, and underwater hazards. Swimmers are advised to use designated areas like the Gyro Park beach, swim with a partner, and consult a health-care provider beforehand, as cold immersion places significant stress on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
