Volkswagen to build $4bn Audi SUV factory in US despite job cuts at home
Volkswagen's Audi brand is investing $4bn (£3bn) in a new factory in the US, creating 4,500 jobs in Georgia. The move comes as the company faces challenges from steep tariffs imposed by the US government, intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, and a costly shift towards electric vehicles.
The factory, which will produce Audi SUVs, is a significant investment in the US market, despite Volkswagen's struggles at home. The company has been cutting jobs in Germany, where it has faced criticism for its handling of the shift towards electric vehicles. The move is seen as a strategic decision to expand Audi's presence in the US market, where demand for SUVs remains high.
The announcement was made by Audi's CEO, Gernot Döllner, who joined US President Donald Trump on stage at a campaign rally in Georgia. The event was seen as unusual, with a big European brand aligning itself with a US politician just days before the midterm elections.
