A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction preventing the Trump administration from barring CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from the White House complex. The ruling comes as the news organizations pursue a lawsuit challenging the administration’s decision to revoke their press credentials.
Legal Battle Over Press Access
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly sided with the media outlets, finding that the administration’s actions likely violated the reporters' due process and freedom of speech rights. During a recent hearing, the White House argued that the bans were rooted in national security concerns. However, Judge Kelly noted that the administration only cited national security after the credentials had already been revoked, stating there was "practically nothing" in the record to support that claim.
The conflict escalated further when the administration threatened other news outlets, including CNN and NBC, with potential antitrust investigations. The threat followed a decision by those networks to temporarily decline participation in the White House press pool—a rotating group responsible for sharing coverage of the president’s activities—in solidarity with the banned organizations. The lawsuit remains ongoing as the court evaluates the administration's authority to restrict media access.
