Open-source graph database vendor ArangoDB has officially released version 3.9 of its namesake platform, bringing a series of updates designed to help users manage growing data workloads. Generally available as of February 15 for open-source users, enterprise customers, and the ArangoDB Oasis cloud database-as-a-service platform, the new version focuses heavily on scaling database operations and refining search functionality.
While ArangoDB offers multimodel capabilities and originally gained recognition as a document database, market analysts view its evolution in the graph sector as particularly notable. According to IDC analyst Carl Olofson, the graph database market is active and features prominent purpose-built competitors like Neo4j, TigerGraph, and Amazon Neptune. Although ArangoDB initially promoted itself around document and multimodel uses, Olofson notes that its strongest play and most significant advances have unfolded within the graph space.
Enhancing Scalability for Large Clusters
As organizations push toward larger deployments and heavier data usage, infrastructure demands have grown. According to Jörg Schad, CTO at ArangoDB, the engineering team built multiple features directly into version 3.9 to address scale in terms of sheer data volume and sprawling cluster deployments.
Among the primary performance enhancements is the ability to execute queries at higher speeds across a large volume of database nodes. Additionally, ArangoDB 3.9 introduces optimizations specifically geared toward balancing database clusters as user workloads expand.
Hybrid Smart Graphs and Search Capabilities
A central addition to ArangoDB 3.9 is a feature called the hybrid smart graph. Previously, the platform offered smart graphs to shard graph data across multiple nodes, while smaller datasets often relied strictly on data replication to scale out. Hybrid smart graphs allow the query optimizer to combine smart sharding and data replication simultaneously when evaluating searched data.
The platform's full-text search engine, ArangoSearch, also received updates. Designed to query across graph data, JSON documents, and geospatial information, ArangoSearch is frequently used to identify initial starting nodes for graph pattern matching in applications like fraud detection and complex analytics.
Version 3.9 introduces a new segmentation analyzer to improve language searching. Because single documents or data graphs frequently contain mixed content, ArangoSearch—which already supports more than 40 human languages—can now better segment queries and results according to language.
Future Outlook
Looking ahead, ArangoDB plans to continue refining its platform. CTO Jörg Schad indicated that upcoming versions will likely incorporate storage performance improvements to accelerate graph queries even further, alongside continued efforts to enhance the overall user experience.
