Alberta Referendum Ballots Remain Under Count as Tallying Continues for Remaining Questions

Votes for the remaining nine questions in Alberta's high-stakes provincial referendum are still being actively tallied by Elections Alberta following a projected win for the "remain" side on separation. The Oct. 19 provincial vote, which carried a total price tag of roughly $130 million, featured 10 questions addressing topics including federal relations and immigration.

Political leaders across the spectrum have weighed in on the process following the initial returns. Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi criticized the referendum as an unnecessary financial and mental burden on residents that failed to deliver a strong mandate for UCP Leader Danielle Smith. Conversely, local mayors including Edmonton's Andrew Knack and Calgary's Jeromy Farkas pointed to the early results as a clear endorsement of stability and a reaffirmation of the province's place within Confederation, while expressing hope that municipal and provincial attention can now pivot back to pressing concerns like healthcare, safety, and economic development.
