BRASILIA — Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has secured a fourth non-consecutive term after defeating right-wing Senator Flávio Bolsonaro in a closely watched presidential runoff.
The result bucks recent global anti-incumbent trends and counters a broader wave of right-wing electoral victories across Latin America. Voting hours were extended by two hours in response to public transportation issues reported across three cities in Bahia following a request from Lula's campaign accepted by Supreme Justice Cristiano Zanin.
International political analyst Dr Flavia Bellieni Zimmermann from Deakin University noted that the outcome reinforces democratic institutions in Brazil, contrasting with the political history represented by the Bolsonaro family.
