Election Commission of Pakistan Proposes Mandatory AI Labels for Election Coverage

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has introduced a new proposal that would require media outlets and social media influencers to clearly label artificial intelligence-altered content related to elections.

According to a draft notification issued on October 23, the ECP shared the regulatory proposal with various stakeholders, inviting their feedback until November 20.

Proposed Scope for Media Provisions

Under the guidelines outlined in the draft provisions, the labeling requirements would apply broadly across multiple communication platforms. Specifically, the mandate covers:

  • Print media outlets
  • Electronic media platforms
  • Digital media outlets
  • Social media influencers

The initiative aims to address the integration of AI-altered materials in election coverage by ensuring transparency for audiences across these traditional and digital channels.
