Heavy rains triggered severe flash flooding along the Georgia-Tennessee border late Wednesday and into Thursday morning, prompting emergency declarations and dozens of water rescues in the region.
The National Weather Service issued urgent warnings urging residents to seek higher ground as storm systems dumped up to five inches of rain on McCaysville, a north central Georgia town situated directly across the Toccoa River from Copperhill, Tennessee.
The rapidly rising waters created hazardous conditions that heavily complicated local rescue operations and evacuation efforts. In response to the crisis, the Georgia governor declared local emergencies for the impacted border communities.
