Nationwide Announces 275 Job Cuts Following Virgin Money Integration

Nationwide Building Society has confirmed plans to cut 275 jobs as part of an ongoing effort to streamline operations following its £2.9bn acquisition of Virgin Money. The announcement, made to staff on Wednesday, marks the latest reduction in the workforce since the takeover was finalized in late 2024.

Operational Simplification

Management stated that the redundancies are intended to "remove duplication" across the expanded group. The cuts will impact several departments, including retail, mortgages, HR, finance, communications, and the chief operating officer’s office. A spokesperson for the lender emphasized that the decision is not related to the adoption of artificial intelligence, distinguishing it from recent industry-wide trends of AI-driven layoffs.

The building society confirmed that no customer-facing roles are at risk, maintaining its commitment to keep its 700 branches open through at least 2030. Affected employees are being offered support, including opportunities for retraining and redeployment.
