Oxford Street Pedestrianisation Begins
A significant change has taken place on one of London's most famous shopping streets, with a nearly one-kilometre stretch of Oxford Street now closed to cars, buses, taxis, and bicycles. The road, between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street, has been pedestrianised as part of a major overhaul of the area.
The move, which began on Monday morning, is the first phase of a plan to transform and redesign how the street is used. While vehicles will still be able to flow north and south across the street at certain points, buses are being diverted onto other roads. The pedestrianisation has been a topic of controversy among local residents, who have expressed concerns about the change.
The City of London Corporation has described the initial works as a "test and review" phase, which will inform final designs for the area. The scheme is expected to be completed by spring next year.
