A key supplier to Poundland warns it faces multimillion-pound losses if the discount retailer collapses, as politicians press owners for clarity on the company's future.
Adam Turner, sales director at Bradford-based confectionary supplier Highcrest Retail Brands, told the BBC that Poundland is one of the firm's largest customers of several decades. While Highcrest, which turns over roughly £50m, would stay afloat, Turner stated the business would "lose a few million" in the event of an insolvency.
Industry stakeholders fear that while larger partners might absorb the hit, smaller and medium-sized suppliers could face complete business failure alongside thousands of potential job losses.
The situation has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers, who questioned representatives of Poundland owners Gordon Brothers this week regarding plans for the retailer. Meanwhile, government officials noted readiness to assist employees should the retailer enter administration, though protecting existing jobs remains the primary objective.
Gordon Brothers' European operations head defended the firm's stewardship to the government, highlighting £85m in additional financing provided to Poundland since acquiring the retailer in 2025.
