The Islamabad chapter of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has formally requested the Election Commission of Pakistan to extend the deadline for filing nomination papers for the capital's upcoming local elections by at least 10 days.
According to party representatives, the scheduled local elections are set to take place across Islamabad's 125 union councils. However, PTI Islamabad President Amir Mughal stated that candidates faced severe obstacles in obtaining necessary nomination forms, reporting that election offices lacked staff on Friday and that security guards redirected aspirants to wait until Monday.
Mughal argued that candidates must be granted adequate time to properly secure, complete, and submit their election documents. In addition to the deadline extension request, the PTI official alleged that authorities might be setting the stage to delay the local polls for a fifth time and criticized existing legal frameworks that leave local representatives with limited governing powers compared to bureaucrats.
