Researchers have found that combining artificial intelligence with data from portable blood pressure monitors and wrist-worn health trackers can detect early warning signs of a dangerous hypertensive crisis up to three days before it happens.

Predicting Hypertensive Crises in Stage 2 Hypertension

The preliminary research focuses on adults diagnosed with stage 2 high blood pressure, defined as readings of 140/90 mm Hg or higher. By utilizing AI to analyze ongoing measurements from portable cuff-based blood pressure monitors alongside daily metrics gathered by wrist-worn wearables, systems can spot patterns signaling an elevated risk for a hypertensive crisis. This medical emergency involves blood pressure surging past 180/120 mm Hg and can cause acute damage to vital organs.

The findings are scheduled to be presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2026. If validated further, the approach could offer critical advance notice for patients and healthcare providers to intervene before severe, life-threatening complications develop.
